Thoroughbred Racing & Breeding · London
From Foal to Finish Line
Laili Bloodstock and Racing was started by Jay Matharu in 2020, marking his entry into the esteemed ranks of thoroughbred breeders and owners. Jay owns, races and breeds thoroughbreds — and has disrupted the traditional paradigm by infusing new AI software, biometric data and analytics tools to refine and modernise our breeding and selection strategy.
The operation spans Britain, France, Ireland and the United States, with horses in training under eight of the most accomplished trainers on both sides of the Atlantic. Each horse is placed with the trainer best suited to its profile.
At the core of the Laili philosophy is the belief that quality beats quantity. A smaller, carefully curated string managed with precision and intention will outperform a larger, less focused operation over the long term.
View the Full String"We are building Laili with a simple philosophy which is to buy with conviction, place each horse where it can thrive, and breed with a long-term view. Data helps sharpen the decision, but the horse always comes first — including after racing, whether that means breeding, polo, retraining or retirement."— Jay Matharu, Founder
Own, Race & Breed
Laili was created to do bloodstock differently. We are not trying to build the biggest string — we are trying to build the most considered one.
Every horse we buy, breed or place is selected with purpose. We use biometric and AI data, conformation analysis and breeding information to support our decisions, but we always combine this with experienced eyes, instinct and traditional horsemanship. For us, data and horsemanship work together — one sharpens the other.
Our ambition is simple: to build a modern racing and breeding operation that gives owners a proper experience, gives each horse the best possible chance, and creates long-term value from foal to finish line.
That responsibility does not end when a horse leaves racing. We care deeply about where our horses go next — whether that is breeding, retraining, polo, leisure riding or a proper retirement home.
Every horse deserves to be looked after beyond the racecourse.
A selection from our current roster across racing, breeding and foal divisions.
Since our inception we have been dedicated to producing superior, winning horses. A selection of recent Pattern and Listed performers.
At the heart of Laili Bloodstock is a thriving band of ten broodmares and eight foals, each chosen for their own race record, conformation and the commercial appeal of their bloodlines.
The majority are permanently based at the National Stud in Newmarket — one of the world's most prestigious thoroughbred facilities, set between the Rowley Mile and July courses under the stewardship of the Jockey Club. Others are looked after at Copgrove Stud in Yorkshire, while a select group is based in the heart of Normandy at Haras de Coulonces, with matings selected to optimise for both performance and commercial value.
